The Man of Honor

A Life Well Lived

Born May 26, 1946
Celebrating 80 Years

Before the decades of wisdom, the family milestones, and a lifetime of stories — there was a young man who answered the call to serve his country in the United States Coast Guard. That spirit of duty, courage, and unwavering character has defined every chapter of his life since.

This trip to Gettysburg — hallowed ground where Americans fought and gave their lives for their nation — feels like the only fitting place to celebrate a man who served it.

Some men are born great. Others serve with everything they have and become something even better.

July 1, 1863 — The Opening Clash

Union cavalry under Gen. Buford clashes with Confederate infantry northwest of town. Despite stubborn resistance on McPherson's Ridge and Oak Ridge, Union forces are overwhelmed and pushed back through Gettysburg to Cemetery Hill by late afternoon — setting the stage for two more days of decisive battle.

July 2, 1863 — The Flanks

Lee attacks both Union flanks. Longstreet's assault sees fierce fighting at Devil's Den, Little Round Top, the Wheatfield, and the Peach Orchard. Ewell's corps strikes Cemetery Hill and Culp's Hill in the north. Both assaults ultimately fail to break the Union "fishhook" line.

July 3, 1863 — Pickett's Charge

Lee orders a massive frontal assault on the Union center at Cemetery Ridge. Nearly 12,500 Confederate soldiers march across three-quarters of a mile of open ground. Concentrated Union artillery and rifle fire devastate the attack. The charge fails — and Lee begins his retreat to Virginia the following day.

Book Your Guide Early

Because it is a 250th anniversary year, book your Licensed Battlefield Guide 3–4 months in advance. They will be in high demand.

Senior-Friendly

Gettysburg is very accessible. Almost all major monuments have pull-off parking. Your father will only need to walk more than 50 feet if he wants to.

May & June Weather

May brings highs in the high 60s to mid-70s. June warms to the low 80s. Both months beat the massive heat and crowds of the July 1–3 battle anniversary.
